Stittsville doesn’t sit still. Once a hamlet of a few hundred people only a couple generations back, it’s now one of the Ottawa area’s fastest-growing communities, with roughly 20 residential projects working through the approval or construction pipeline at any given time. New neighbourhoods like Blackstone, Fernbank Crossing, Shea Village, and Abbott’s Run are filling in the Fernbank area, apartments are going up along Hazeldean Road and Stittsville Main Street, and a good chunk of the people moving in work just down the road in the Kanata tech park. All that new construction means a lot of brand-new homes, most of which don’t come with a backup generator already installed.

Stittsville is Hydro Ottawa territory, and growth this fast puts real strain on the grid. The town got a hard reminder of that during the May 2022 derecho that tore through the Ottawa region, when the roof of a Stittsville townhouse complex collapsed under the storm and outages across the city stretched into the following week. More recently, a June 2025 outage hit over 3,100 customers across Stittsville and Kanata South at once, a reminder that when the power goes, it tends to take out a whole swath of the west end together.
