Almonte’s an old mill town that’s turned into one of eastern Ontario’s better growth stories, and it also happens to be exactly where Powers Servicing calls home. Downtown still runs along the old Mississippi River mills, but the business park on the edge of town now includes Dairy Distillery (a vodka maker that runs on dairy byproduct), HFT–Healthy Food Technology, and Sport Systems Canada’s athletic equipment manufacturing, so “mill town” doesn’t really cover it anymore. Almonte’s population has climbed to somewhere around 6,300 to 6,400 residents, and Mississippi Mills’ official plan expects roughly 70% of the municipality’s future growth to land right here, which means more homes, more businesses, and more backup generators to keep running.

 

Power in Almonte doesn’t come from Hydro One directly. Local distribution runs through Ottawa River Power Corporation (ORPC), a community-owned utility descended from the old Almonte Electric Light Company, which dates all the way back to 1886. That’s a point of local pride, but it doesn’t make Almonte outage-proof. In one widely felt stretch, an equipment failure at the Hydro One transmission station that feeds ORPC’s system took out power to the entire town for hours overnight before crews got it fully restored around 3 a.m. Planned maintenance outages on Mill Street and other parts of downtown are also a regular occurrence.
