Renfrew’s the kind of town that likes to make things. Mativ (most locals still call it Scapa Tapes) has been rolling hockey tape off the line here since 1980, and it still ships across North America today. That same industrious streak shows up in healthcare too: Renfrew Victoria Hospital is the area’s biggest employer with a staff of 450-plus, and long-term care facilities like Bonnechere Manor round out a healthcare sector that depends on steady power just as much as any factory floor. Add a Walmart Supercentre that pulls shoppers from across Renfrew County, and you’ve got a town with a lot of people and businesses who have real reasons to keep the lights on. The Renfrew County Catholic District School Board is also in the final stretch of building the new St. Thomas the Apostle elementary school, a multi-year construction project that’s kept local trades busy.

 

Here’s a detail worth knowing: most of Renfrew proper actually isn’t Hydro One territory. In-town power runs through Renfrew Hydro, a community-owned utility that’s been running independently since November 2000 and serves roughly 4,400 homes and businesses. Step outside town limits, though, and you’re back on Hydro One’s system along with the rest of Renfrew County, which had a rough stretch in the spring of 2025. A wind storm on April 4, 2025 knocked out power for hundreds of homes on the outskirts of Renfrew, plus Eganville, Lake Clear, and Lake Dore, with some repairs stretching into the afternoon.
