Smiths Falls has one of the wilder business stories in eastern Ontario. Hershey ran a chocolate factory here for 45 years before pulling out in 2008, taking around 400 local jobs with it. Then Tweed moved into the same building and grew into Canopy Growth, which at the height of the cannabis boom in 2018 employed 1,800 people in town and triggered a construction boom of its own. And in a plot twist nobody saw coming, Hershey bought the old plant back in 2023. All that industrial-scale production, chocolate or cannabis, runs on power, and so does the ring of smaller businesses that grew up around it, from bakeries to breweries to the Rideau Canal tourism trade that keeps the town busy every summer.

 

Smiths Falls itself sits in Hydro One territory (the town’s own municipal utility was folded into Hydro One’s system back in the late 1990s), and outages do reach town when the weather turns. A severe storm in May 2022 brought down trees onto power lines and roofs across town, and some residents were still waiting on repairs and restored power four days later.
